Map of the Whorl |
God's of the WhorlThere are nine major gods of the Whorl. In actuality, they are actually computer interfaces for the Mainframe based on the royal family of the despot Typhon (from the Book of the New Sun series). There are also minor based on persons attached to the royal family. CommentaryThe gods of the whorl are parody the classical Graeco-Roman gods, just as the religion they oversee is a deliberate parody of Catholicism merged with Graeco-Roman practices and beliefs. Named after monsters of Hesiod's Theogony, they are artificial, inside-out versions of gods. They are a blasphemy as everything in the Whorl is a blasphemy. See Thelxepeia's Mirrors for more on the artificial, inside-out nature of the Whorl. |

ThelxepeiaGoddess of witchcraft, magicians, and trickery. One of the nine major gods. The daughter of Pas and Echidna. Her image is that of a cock-eyed young woman holding mirrors over a fountain such that they reflect the reflecting waters. DefinitionOne of the Sirens. The Siren sat on an islet and lured men to their deaths with their beautiful song. Their song was so enchanting that mean would dive into water to them and drown or starve to death listening. islet. A fellow Siren of Molpe and a sister to Scylla and Medusa. EtymologyFrom the Greek meaning "enchanting words". Sometimes the name Thelxepeia is shortened to "Thelx," meaning "enchant" which emphasizes her bewitching nature. CommentaryThelxepeia's image (reflecting reflections) is a symbol of the whirling artificiality of the Whorl and by extension, the fallen creation as a whole. In a more hopeful sense, it represents the Christian view of mankind, made in the image of it's creator, seeking as well to imitate him. See Thelxepeia's Mirrors for more this. |
