Betel

A sibyl at the Silver St. cenoby. Betel received prostheses from parts of the chem maid, Molybdenum.. When she died, the prosthetics went to the sibyl Rose. She also owned a necklace of "yellowed ivory" on a silver chain which Marble eventually inherited.

Definition

A climbing pepper plant of Southeast Asia. Also the name for a chewed digestive stimulant and narcotic made from the betel's leaves and nuts and mixed with mineral (shell) lime.

Commentary

The common use of the betel in which it is mixed with lime mirrors Betel's mixture with

Molybdenum. The color of the betel nut is close to that of "yellowed ivory." The necklace once belonging to Betel whch Marble inherits from Rose (yellowed ivory beads on a silver chain), parallels Betel's own condition -- being in sense held together by (silver-colored) Molybdenum.
